Which question type should I use?

  • To get a name, email, phone number or address: use the dedicated types. They validate the format and bring up the right keyboard on phones.
  • For one answer from a short list: multiple choice. For a long list, like countries or products: a searchable dropdown.
  • When the options are visual: picture choice.
  • To measure satisfaction: rating for a quick score, opinion scale with labels for agreement, Net Promoter Score for loyalty.
  • To rate several things on the same scale: a matrix, instead of five separate questions.
  • To find priorities: ranking, where people drag options into order.
  • For anything in their own words: long text. Keep these few; they take the most effort.
  • To book a time, take a payment or collect a signature: Scheduler, Payment and Signature do the whole job inside the form.

Writing questions people answer

  • Ask one thing at a time. “How was the food and service?” is two questions.
  • Use the words your respondents use, not internal jargon.
  • Make only what you truly need required. Every required field is a reason to quit.
  • Put easy questions first and personal ones later, once people are invested.
  • Use the description line for context, so the question itself stays short.

What Net Promoter Score measures

Net Promoter Score asks how likely someone is to recommend you, on a scale from 0 to 10. People who answer 9 or 10 are promoters, 7 or 8 are passives, and 0 to 6 are detractors. The score is the percentage of promoters minus the percentage of detractors, so it runs from −100 to +100. Forms calculates it for you in Results and shows how it moves over time. Follow it with an open question, “What’s the main reason for your score?”, which is where the useful part is.

Validation that helps instead of nags

Each type checks what makes sense for it: emails look like emails, numbers stay within the range you set, and text can have a minimum or maximum length, letters or digits only, or your own pattern. Problems are explained in plain words next to the question as people answer, so nobody reaches the end and gets sent back.
